A new study inJAMA Network Opensuggests that patients who are prescribed an alpha-blocker may benefit from lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The new study, published in theAnnals of Internal Medicineon May 13 in the journal, was the first to show a benefit for patients taking a beta blocker in the first year of treatment.
“This new data shows that, in addition to having a beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease, the increased risk of developing a new cardiovascular event may also be of benefit to patients receiving treatment for a heart condition,” Dr. Robert C. Galson, a heart physician and director of the Heart Center at University of Toronto, said in a news release.
“This new data will confirm our previous data showing that patients who are taking an alpha-blocker for a heart condition may have lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease,” Dr. Galson added.
A randomised trial, the first ever to be conducted to test this hypothesis, has already demonstrated that patients who are prescribed a beta blocker for an abnormal heart condition do have a lower risk of developing a heart condition.
“This is one of the few new research studies that shows that patients who are prescribed an alpha-blocker for an abnormal heart condition who are taking an alpha-blocker for a heart condition may be at an increased risk of developing a new cardiovascular event,” said Dr. Galson, vice president of the Heart Center at University of Toronto.
“This new research will demonstrate that the increased risk of developing a new cardiovascular event may also be of benefit to patients receiving treatment for a heart condition,” Dr.
In the study, patients who were given an alpha-blocker for a heart condition were given a daily dose of 5 mg, which was then titrated up to 100 mg per day. After a week, patients who were given an alpha-blocker had a 10% lower risk of developing a new cardiovascular event.
Galson noted that “the data in the study have not yet been analysed in a randomised manner. The results may be of interest to patients who are taking alpha-blockers for a heart condition.”
